The is a collection of essays written between 1905 and 1910 that I believe have aged very well. Arthur Cheney Train looks at a different topic in each chapter or essay. The essays are over one hundred years old, but seem to still be current and applicable today.He addresses crime from the standpoint of a lawyer who sees the results in the courtroom. He is not interested in being politically correct, given that the essays were written in the 1905 - 10 period.
The first essay, "Chapter 1 The Pleasant Fiction of the Presumption of Innocence" deals with how city police departments and politicians address crime, it is practical from their point of view, but perhaps a little rough on the edges.
Chapter 2 deals with preparing a case for trial from the point of view of the lawyer which is insightful as Mr. Train was a very good and experienced lawyer in the day.
Chapter 3 deals with sensationalism and jury trials. The O. J. Simpson trial would have fit into this category, as well as other famous trials.
Chapter 4 addressees why men kill.
Chapters 5 and 6 are two essays on detectives and their roll in the criminal justice system of the early 1900s.
Chapter 7 addresses women in the courts in the period of the early 1900s.
Chapter 8 addresses tricks of the trade which is interesting.
Chapter 9 is titled: "What Fosters Crime?", where he looks at the factors as seen in the early 1900s.
Chapter 10 is: "Insanity and the Law". Insanity has always been a factor in crime, and this essay addresses how insanity was addressed over 100 years ago in the courts.
I found this an interesting look at the American Criminal justice system in the early 1900s as seen through the eyes of a then practicing attorney. Recommend this book to people interested in the law and the times.

I did not finish this book. It was too dry and clinical for my taste. I get the feeling that it is probably aimed at students.
