This is the second volume of Bug the Bug. New in this volume, besides the interview questions, is the pairing of bugs and flies that could be used to imitate them. These flies may look like they’ve been chewed on, they have, and appear to be tied by a rank amateur, they have. But, unlike your drift, the fly doesn’t have to be perfect. I’ve also expanded the number of live links to background information like knot tying, stream flows, and other books.
Everyone’s an expert on the river. Henry Winkler, Joe Humphreys, Kirk Deeter, George Daniel, Will Rice, and countless others have written books about fly fishing America’s rivers. But not one of these authors has interviewed, much less quoted, those who have been in the streams the longest. That’s right; the bugs.
Only long-term observers of this minutiae can be trusted to provide insight.
These bugs have been around a long time. Fossils in coal give indisputable evidence that mayflies and damsel flies have been around for 350 million years. While it’s true we’ve gone from the typewriter to text messaging in a hundred years or so, we haven’t survived any of the 9 mass extinction events since life appeared on this planet and they have made it through the last 5. They have a right to be snarky.
But when we ask bugs for advice, can we understand their responses? Some among us, known as fly fishing addicts and entomologists, certainly do. We “read” the hatch. By observing the way they move, we too can understand what they are feeling- the same way we read a dog’s posture. If we look under submerged rocks for colonies of bugs and don’t find any, the bugs have told us what they think of the water quality. The bugs have everything to tell us about trout. We just have to ask them. Unfortunately, we don’t always know the right questions.
To the bugs, our questions will seem asinine. It’s sad but true that we’ve all had these questions but were afraid to ask. Who wants to admit she doesn’t know what to do when there’s no hatch to match, or how many casts to make before moving upstream. The bugs have answers to these questions and good advice for the clueless.
Don’t be afraid to communicate with the bugs. It’s not the trout that is the canary in the miner’s tunnel; it’s the bug.

Bug the Bug Another Year of Practical Fly Fishing Advice from Smart Bugs Book 2 eBook John H Davenport
Speaking as one of the "clueless", I am delighted with the wealth of information in this little book. The bugs truly come alive. Even though I generally fish in salt water with a spinning reel and live bait, the depth of understanding John conveys of the fish, the bugs, the flies and the environment would be fascinating to anyone who has ever experienced the thrill of outwitting a fish.Product details

great fun book for the casual to expert fly fishing person. Davenport has wit and a sense of humor (or maybe it's the bugs?) that adds smiles to an enjoyable read. This is not a biology text book! And while there are bits of interesting facts and shared knowledge to be gleaned, this is mostly a series of well written vignettes told by someone who not only clearly enjoys his fishing but has learned not to take it or himself too seriously.
